For my first "Book Talk Tuesday" I will be featuring "It's Pumpkin Day, Mouse!", by Laura Numeroff and Felecia Bond. It has the beloved mouse and dog from the "If you give..." series. In the book, Mouse is decorating his pumpkins for Halloween and each pumpkin features a different emotion.
The scary face is my Little Guy's favorite pumpkin. He loves this page, "Eek! What is that?"
This book offers a great opportunity for children to practice identifying feelings based on expression and would be perfect for a quick social-emotional read-a-loud
In my classroom, I used these adorable Pumpkin Feeling Cards from LessonPix.com and had my kiddo's match the pumpkins expression to the picture of a person with the same expression. I used picture cards from our Second Step kits, but you could find pictures in magazines or take pictures of the kids in you class making different expressions. They loved this activity!
